Doodlers Unite! TED Talk Sunni Brown
My students always used to laugh when I tell them I doodled at staff meetings, but then I told them I need to, that it truly helped me to concentrate and to process. I know many art kids probably doodle all over their work in other classes. I hope their teachers understand how necessary it is!
THIS IS GOLDEN:
"So here is my point: Under no circumstances should doodling be eradicated from a classroom or a boardroom or even the war room. On the contrary, doodling should be leveraged in precisely those situations where information density is very high and the need for processing that information is very high. And I will go you one further. Because doodling is so universally accessible and it is not intimidating as an art form, it can be leveraged as a portal through which we move people into higher levels of visual literacy. My friends, the doodle has never been the nemesis of intellectual thought. In reality, it is one of its greatest allies." (Sunni Brown)

Focal Point Line Doodle Projects
Studio Art Project
Create a SQUARE or rectangular line doodle with a specific, non-centered focal point. Use the rule of thirds to compose your drawing.
Steps:
Materials:
Use black pen (gel roller ink) for your drawing.
You may create some sketches in light pencil to establish your focal point, but if you do it all in pencil and then go ove it you will not only take twice as long but the pen may smudge when you try to erase the pencil underneath. Craftsmanship and creativity and patience will be needed for this project!
Studio Art Project
Create a SQUARE or rectangular line doodle with a specific, non-centered focal point. Use the rule of thirds to compose your drawing.
Steps:
- Draw a shape that will be your focal point.
- Draw lines radiating from the focal point to the edge of your paper.
- Fill in the shapes that these lines made with interesting doodle marks, patterns and textures. Remember to keep everything facing in the direction of your focal point; the intent is to draw the viewers eye to the FP, and make “visual signposts.”
- Remember that this activity is about LINES. How many different types of lines can you convey in your drawing? Thick, thin, wavy, geometric, implied, etc.
- If you want to leave your drawing black and white you can do that.
- If you choose to use colored pencil, do not just color the shapes in- use a specific color scheme. One that works well with this exercise is a WARM colored focal point (red, yellow, orange) and cool colors for the radiating lines.shapes.
- IMPORTANT! Be sure to use GRADATION or shading when coloring!
