Vocabulary

Shape is a closed contour, or a defined area.
It is 2d and has only length and width. Shape is created when a line becomes connected and encloses space. It is the outline or outward appearance of something. Shapes are 2 Dimensional

There are two basic types of shape: geometric and organic. 



Geometric shapes have smooth, even sides and have perfectly uniform measurements (circle, square, triangle) and mostly don't appear in nature. 

Organic shapes are freeform and are more complex shapes, often found in nature, such as plants and animals

Positive shapes occupy positive space

Negative space is the area around positive shapes, also called the background

Contrapposto a standing, relaxed pose in which all of the weight is on one leg

Gesture Drawing  A gesture drawing is a quick sketching in of the general pose of a figure. It is meant to be quick, rough, and uses many repetitive lines. It is often done in 5 or 10 minutes, sometimes as few as 1!

Blind Contour Drawing is a drawing exercise where the artist draws the contour of their subject without looking at the paper.
